Happy New Year 2021!!

It's 2021! 


It is the norm at this time of year for everyone to set new goals. I understand that. It is a new year with so many new possibilities so why not take the initiative and set a new goal or two. 


May I make a suggestion?


Be kind to yourself. 


2020 was a rough year on many levels and we are not out of this pandemic yet. Yes, vaccines are being made available but I think it is safe to say it will be awhile yet until life becomes somewhat normal again, whatever that may be. We have all been through a lot through the past year so I encourage you to remember that as you set your goals and be gentle to yourself. You deserve that. 


Here are some healthy goal suggestions:


1. Create a morning routine that brings you positivity.


The chaos of Covid- 19 can leave you feeling...well chaotic! Positivity doesn't mean that the tough times do not exist. I am not asking you to live in denial. Positivity means you find the good in amongst the tough times. Being able to do that releases negativity from your life which will improve your mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health. 


A mantra as simple as "I'm good enough, and I can handle anything that happens today" can shift your thinking. A positive mantra can help you feel primed and ready to take on the day. You can also take a minute to make your bed for added structure. You will immediately feel at ease. 


2. Avoid watching or reading too much news to keep your mental health intact.


If the 24/7 newscast stresses you out pare down your news watching to an hour or two. Instead focus on issues within your sphere. If something is bothering you write to your local MP or find a way to donate or give back to an important cause. 


3. Find a fitness routine that makes you feel good.


You don't have to reach a certain weight or physique, but getting off of the couch and going for a walk in your neighbourhood can do wonders for your physical & mental health. If you are up for it do a more rigorous routine, practise some yoga or whatever may meet your needs. Just get active! Your body and mind will thank you. 


4.Learn how to stay connected with family & friends.


Technology may not be your thing or maybe you love it, either way technology is proving its worth at this time. With social distancing, limits to gatherings and lockdowns it has been hard to see our family and friends. Trips have been cancelled and weddings have been downsized. We are humans though who need contact in order to stay healthy. So call a loved one or arrange a video chat. Just speaking to someone you care about can boost your spirits. 


5. Get mental health support when you need it.


Let's be honest, we all have a lot going on. The stress of the pandemic plus the holidays is a lot to carry. 


You are not alone in feeling this heaviness. If it is getting too much to handle on your own reach out to someone you feel safe with for support.
